Monsanto Corporation was the first company to mass-produce red LEDs for the industry, mostly as replacement lights for indicators and seven-segment displays. The first time that LEDs actually did displace incandescent lamps was in vehicle brake lights, signal lights, and traffic lights – back in 1987! Burlington, Vermont the state's largest city claims to be wholly powered by renewable energies. It states that it will save $20 million by switching to renewable sources from fossil fuels. In addition consumers are benefiting from this, as electricity prices have not increased since 2009 unlike many other places in the USA. The direction the city is showing is highly commendable and should be copied throughout the world.
